Ceylon Tea: Tradition, Wellness & Trust
Few beverages in the world carry the same legacy as Ceylon Tea. From its humble beginnings in the misty hills of Sri Lanka to becoming one of the world’s most trusted exports, Ceylon Tea has been a story of resilience, wellness, and authenticity.
The Birth of Ceylon Tea
In 1852, James Taylor, a Scottish planter, arrived in Ceylon and settled at the Loolecondera Estate, Galaha. By 1867, he established a 19-acre tea plantation that laid the foundation for what would become Sri Lanka’s largest export industry.
Taylor’s pioneering efforts led to the establishment of the island’s first fully equipped tea factory in 1872. A year later, Ceylon Tea made its international debut in London, setting the stage for global recognition.
Growth, Innovation & Global Recognition
The late 19th century marked rapid development:
- Introduction of the Sirocco tea dryer (1877) and tea-rolling machine (1880) revolutionized production.
- The Colombo Tea Auction was launched in 1883, becoming the world’s oldest operating tea auction.
- By the 1890s, nearly all coffee plantations had been converted to tea due to its profitability.
By 1899, almost 400,000 acres of land were under cultivation, firmly establishing Sri Lanka as a leader in global tea production.
Ceylon Tea in the Modern Era
Ceylon Tea continued to evolve throughout the 20th and 21st centuries:
- 1980s → Official supplier for the Moscow Olympics and Brisbane Commonwealth Games.
- 1990s → Sri Lanka Tea Board introduced the Lion Logo, certifying 100% Pure Ceylon Tea.
- 2000s → The Tea Museum was opened in Kandy, and export revenues crossed USD 1 billion.
- 2011 → Ceylon Tea obtained Geographical Indication (GI) status, ensuring authenticity and quality worldwide.

Beyond its commercial success, Ceylon Tea has long been valued for its wellness properties:
- Rich in antioxidants supporting overall health.

- Promotes heart health and boosts immunity.
- Available in a wide range, from black and green teas to herbal infusions, each offering unique benefits.
